What's a 71-year age gap between friends? During a regular catch up with his support worker, blind veteran Kevin, 91, said he wanted to get out and about - so we introduced him to Morgan, who's just 20.

At 91, blind veteran Kevin is showing no signs of slowing down. But while he's confident ordering an Uber to get out and about, he mentioned to his support worker that he'd feel more comfortable having someone accompany him. With his limited vision, a bit of extra support makes all the difference.

That's when our Volunteer Coordinator, Sarah, stepped in. She began searching for a volunteer who could not only drive but would also enjoy spending time with Kevin on his outings. Just a few weeks later, Kevin was introduced to Morgan - a cheerful 20-year-old who happened to live nearby.

Despite the 71-year age gap, the pair hit it off instantly. Once they started chatting, they realised how much they have in common as they swapped stories about their local area and discovering that friendship doesn't have an age limit.

A genuine friendship

Although only recently introduced, Kevin and Morgan have already formed a genuine friendship. From catching up over coffee and wandering around the garden centre to enjoying relaxed breakfasts and weekend shopping trips, their time together is full of laughter and easy conversation.

Kevin says, "Getting out of the house with Morgan has made a difference to me in lots of ways. I feel a lot better when I get home; I've got a lot more energy afterwards and she brightens up my day, especially when I'm stuck at home so much. Yes, everything becomes brighter.

"When I was told that Morgan was just 20 years old, I didn't think we'd be on the same wavelength. But she's great to have a conversation with - she's very interesting and I'm very happy to meet up with her. She keeps me involved in the conversation, you know? She always keeps it going."

Growing in independence

Recently, Kevin began long cane training with one of our Rehabilitation Officers for the Visually Impaired (ROVI). Now, Morgan is helping him to put those new skills into practice - offering encouragement and support as Kevin grows in confidence and take steps towards getting out and about independently.

Morgan says, "Since my meetings with Kevin, I've had such a positive outlook on life. He's had such an interesting life and he inspires me to explore the world and meet new people. I just hope that when I reach Kevin’s age, I will have had as many adventures as he's had. I love our visits and look forward to them all week."

"The age difference between me and Kevin is great as he has so much wisdom to teach me. I'm grateful for the opportunity Blind Veterans UK has given us. Thank you, Kevin, for being such a great friend."
